A new geothermal and solar thermal plant was handed over to the Air Force Aviation Medical Institute in Königsbrück, Saxony, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010. It is only the second plant of this type in the Bundeswehr, built by the Military District Administration (WBV) East in its area of responsibility.
This newly built geothermal system, which is coupled with a solar collector system, has the task of raising the return temperature of the local heating network. The amount of heat required for this is obtained from 30 geothermal boreholes, each 200 meters deep. 30 probes made of high-pressure cross-linked polyethylene material were professionally regulated on the approximately 3,600 square meter geothermal area. 2 project-specific and individually developed SmartHeat Titan large heat pumps, each with 126 kW, ensure a flow temperature of 75 °C. Integrated into the building management system, they now heat the barracks reliably.
