The 5 new residential buildings of the housing cooperative "Erfurt" eG on Christian-Kittel-Straße, completed in August 2011, are part of a holistically planned building complex in the south of Erfurt. The residential complex, which has a full basement, consists of four-story individual buildings, whose floor plan variants and furnishings meet high living standards. 61 apartments with a total living space of 5266m2 were created as 2 to 4-room apartments.

When looking at the residential complex, the exterior view of the houses and the landscaped green areas alone testify to the loving details. The buildings were arranged on the property in such a way that a courtyard is formed inside. In this area, terraces, extended tenant gardens, play areas and car parking spaces assigned to a driveable path were planned and implemented. On closer inspection, technical know-how was also used inside the buildings to ensure a high energy standard, comfort such as elevators was considered and emphasis was placed on increased sound insulation.

The selected combination for the entire heat supply from valuable SmartHeat heat pumps, solar thermal energy and a boiler for wood pellets fuel had the cheapest full heating costs and the lowest CO2 emissions.

The heat for space heating is generated by a precisely fitting SmartHeat brine/water heat pump in each house. The borehole fields for using geothermal energy are located in the immediate vicinity of the respective houses and each have between 6 and 7 deep boreholes of 99 m each.

The extraction capacity of the geothermal energy was measured beforehand by a test borehole with a thermal response test. Based on this result, the borehole field was dimensioned so that a monovalent heat supply is possible. This means that the heat requirement for space heating can be covered 100% by the heat pump system all year round. A second heat source is therefore not available for space heating. A total of 34 probes are located on the property, which serve as a source to economically supply the self-sufficient SmartHeat heat pumps of the Titan series with 43 - 54 kW output per house. This output is measured using a monitoring system to prove the sustainability of the system.

The use of efficient heat pumps in conjunction with underfloor heating is planned and implemented. The SmartHeat heat pumps make use of the option of effective passive cooling in the summer months in conjunction with the planned underfloor heating. This means that the probes are regenerated at the same time. Appropriate switching devices and heat exchangers are installed.
